Welcome to South Australia

South Australia is the most central southern state of Australia. It boasts a total land area of 983,482 square kilometres (379,725 square miles), and is the fourth largest of Australia’s six states and two mainland territories. South Australia offers the perfect balance between adventure and relaxation. With a capital voted “most liveable city in the world” and framed by 3,800 kilometres of coastline, South Australia has a lot to offer visitors who come back time and time again.

The wine and seafood capital of Australia, South Australia is where the Murray River meets the sea and is the gateway to the outback. South Australia is known for its major festivals and great regional festivities.

Its 12 tourism regions include famous wine destinations including the Barossa and the Clare Valley, the natural wonderland of Kangaroo Island, the most accessible outback in Australia, which includes the famed Flinders Ranges, the relaxing and beautiful Murray River and the seafood frontier of the Eyre Peninsula. On the Fleurieu Peninsula you’ll find great beaches and nearby wine regions, while the Yorke Peninsula is the perfect summer family getaway. The Limestone Coast offers charming seaside towns, natural wonders and the Coonawarra, while the Adelaide Hills offer bush, farms and welcoming villages on Adelaide’s doorstep.

South Australia’s capital city, Adelaide, is a vibrant hub buzzing with life, boasting great food and wine at more than 700 restaurants cafes and pubs, great retail therapy in Rundle Mall and the “cultural boulevard” of North Terrace. It is home to some of Australia’s best museums and the South Australian Art Gallery. Everything is so close in Adelaide, with the beach just 20 minutes by tram from the city centre, and many of the state’s regions within two hours drive away.
